Stainless Steel Turnbuckles — Marine Grade Rigging Screws

A stainless steel turnbuckle is the tensioning and length-adjusting fitting in a wire rope or rod system. Rotating the centre body pulls the two ends closer or pushes them apart, so you can set and hold the exact length a run needs.

Ends are built to match what they connect to: jaw, eye, hook, stub, toggle, swage, or wall mount, in ten common pairings. Bodies and ends are made from 316 stainless steel for marine, architectural, lifting and offshore service.

Product Features

  • Wide size range, light to heavy duty. Thread sizes run from 3/16" to 1-1/2", with working load limits from 100 lb up to 17,000 lb.
  • Twelve threaded body sizes for tight selection. Tube bodies come in 1/4-28, 5/16-24, 3/8-24, 7/16-20, 1/2-20, 5/8-18, 3/4-16, 7/8-14, 1-12, 1-1/8-12, 1-1/4-12 and 1-3/8-12.
  • Anti-seize on larger bodies. Bodies from 5/8" up carry a bronze thread insert, which stops stainless threads galling after long exposure to salt water.
  • Three build routes. Forged bodies for the highest strength, precision-cast bodies for cost, and machined tube bodies for toggle ends.
  • Documented to recognised standards. Forged bodies meet ASTM F1145-05 (2011) Type 1 Class G; cast bodies meet Type 1 Class C, F or H, with reference to ASME B30.26-2010.
  • Toggle ends remove side bending. A toggle pivots through a wide angle so the end follows the load direction instead of kinking the wire at the anchor.

Applications

  • Architectural tie rods and curtain wall. Tensioning structural cables and facade rods, then locking them to length.
  • Marine and sailboat rigging. Setting shroud and forestay tension.
  • Lifting and rigging. Load securing and lifting-point adjustment, under ASTM F1145 / ASME B30.26.
  • Offshore platforms. Tension points that sit in salt spray and constant damp.
  • Stainless rope mesh and cable netting. End tensioning and length take-up using swage and toggle ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a 1/2" stainless steel turnbuckle hold?
2,200 lb working load in the jaw & jaw range, at 12.00" overall length.

What is the difference between a jaw turnbuckle and a hook turnbuckle?
A jaw uses a pin, so it holds more securely. A hook loads and unloads faster but can slip off under slack.

Why do stainless turnbuckles seize, and how do you stop it?
Stainless threads gall when rubbed against each other, often in seawater. Bodies from 5/8" up use a bronze insert to reduce it.

Which standard covers load-rated turnbuckles?
ASTM F1145-05 (2011) for the body, with ASME B30.26-2010 for safe use. Buyers should be able to check the working load and the standard number together.
