A stainless steel eye bolt threads into a structure and gives you a ring to lift from or tie off to. The eye carries the load; the shank holds it in place.
The stainless steel eye bolt range comes in four build tiers: wire-formed types, forged shoulder and plain types, cast machinery types, and a metric series. Load-rated sizes use 316 non-magnetic stainless steel and meet ASME B30.26-2010 Section 26-2.0, running from 1/4" to 1" with working loads of 500 to 9,370 lb.
Material: 304 stainless for wire-formed types; 316 stainless for cast types; 316-NM stainless for forged load-rated types.
Thread form: UNC (inch) or metric.
Typical sizes (forged shoulder eye bolt):
| Thread size | Thread | Working load (lb) | Unit weight (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4" | 1/4"-20 | 500 | 0.06 |
| 5/16" | 5/16"-18 | 800 | 0.12 |
| 3/8" | 3/8"-16 | 1,200 | 0.20 |
| 1/2" | 1/2"-13 | 2,150 | 0.30 |
| 5/8" | 5/8"-11 | 3,440 | 0.60 |
| 3/4" | 3/4"-10 | 5,140 | 0.94 |
| 7/8" | 7/8"-9 | 7,130 | 2.32 |
| 1" | 1"-8 | 9,370 | 2.56 |
Larger hot-dip galvanised drop-forged types extend to 1-1/2", with working loads to 24,000 lb.

How much can a 1/2" shoulder eye bolt hold?
2,150 lb working load, in the forged 316-NM shoulder range.
Can an eye bolt take a side pull?
The rating assumes a straight, inline pull. Any angle needs a reduction, so check the derating table for the job.
What is the safety factor?
Ultimate load is five times the working load.
What is the difference between a shoulder eye bolt and a plain eye bolt?
A shoulder type passes load through a machined shoulder face, so it seats more firmly. A plain type has a simpler shape for tighter spaces.
