Perforated Metal Mesh

Perforated Metal Mesh

Perforated metal mesh is a flat sheet of stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium or galvanised steel pierced with a uniform pattern of holes. The hole shape, pitch and open area are selected to balance strength, airflow and visibility for the job at hand. We punch round, square, slotted, hexagonal and decorative patterns in sheet from 0.3 mm to 12 mm thick, with hole diameters from 0.5 mm up to 25 mm and open areas from roughly 5% to 75%. Sheets are supplied flat, cut to size, or levelled and finished to suit the panel.

Product Advantages

  • Open area by design — the percentage of punched void is calculated from hole size, pattern and pitch, so airflow, light transmission and filtration rate can be tuned to the exact job rather than guessed.
  • Rigid yet light — holes interrupt the mass without cutting the panel edges, so a perforated sheet keeps much of its stiffness at a fraction of the weight of solid plate.
  • Wide material choice — carbon steel for economy and strength, 304 / 316 stainless for corrosion and hygiene, aluminium 3003 / 5052 where weight matters, plus brass, copper, galvanised and weathering steel.
  • Pattern as finish — round, square, slotted, hexagonal and custom perforation turn a functional panel into an architectural screen, acoustic face or decorative façade.
  • Consistent punching — hole diameter is held to roughly ±0.08 mm (tighter on precision tooling) with clean, burr-free edges after levelling and deburring.
  • Ready to mount — supplied flat, levelled, deburred, or as framed and bent panels with mounting holes, cut to size.

Product Uses

  • Filtration & sieving — screens for grain, aggregate, food and chemical processing.
  • Ventilation & guards — machine guards, exhaust and heat-exchanger panels, speaker grilles.
  • Architecture — façade cladding, sun screens, balustrade infill, ceilings and acoustic panels.
  • Industrial & safety — anti-slip flooring, platform covers, crush screens and heavy-duty guarding.
  • Decorative — furniture, store fixtures, partitions and signage.

Product Specifications (Hole Pattern & Open Area)

Open area (OA) — the free void as a share of the sheet surface — is the number that drives airflow, light and filtration. For the three most common patterns:

  • Round holes, 60° staggered — OA% = 90.69 × (D ÷ P)² (the workhorse pattern: highest open area for a given strength).
  • Round holes, straight rows — OA% = 78.54 × (D ÷ P)² (about 13% less open area than staggered at the same ratio).
  • Square holes, inline — OA% = 100 × (S ÷ P)² (S = side length).

D = hole diameter, S = square side, P = pitch (centre-to-centre), all in millimetres. Use the table below to read off common combinations.

Read across: a 5 mm hole on an 8 mm pitch (row 8, column D=5.0) gives 35.4% open area. As a rule of thumb, standard perforated metal lands between roughly 15% and 45% open; above about 40% the actual ligament between holes gets thin and the sheet becomes noticeably more flexible.
